Age often takes its toll on both husband and wife at the same time.  Both marriage partners can experience health problems simultaneously, and many times lifelong mates die within a few months of each other.  No time is available for estate planning.  The assets - while passing automatically upon the death of the first spouse - must be probated upon the death of the second spouse.

Estate planning is a lot easier when both husband and wife are in fairly good health.  They can discuss their wishes and support each other emotionally.  There is a great deal of comfort and satisfaction in knowing that everything is in order if something unexpected should occur.
